Are you a Do-It-Yourself-Er?

Are you a Do-It-Yourself-Er?
Does the idea of rolling your sleeves up and spending the weekend building your own shed sound like a dream to you? Building a shed requires some planning and general knowledge of construction techniques.

Here are some basic steps to help you get started:

  1. Get inspired! Design your custom-made, bespoke shed in this incredible 3D design tool on our website to see what your design could look like.

  2. Find a reliable shed supplier who can help you with all the materials you'll need, including 100% Australian Made steel, roofing and wall cladding, doors, windows, and any other materials you need for your shed. Ensure your shed supplier can also assist you with all the required permits.

  3. Once you’ve chosen the most suitable location for your shed, it's time to mark out its boundaries. Make sure the area is level and has good drainage.

  4. Get your owner-builder certificate; this allows you to take responsibility for domestic building work on your land. Each state will have their version and application of the owner-builder certificate and course.

You can apply for your Victorian Owner Builders certificate here:  https://www.vba.vic.gov.au/owner-builders

You can apply for your Tasmanian Owner Builder certificate here:  https://www.cbos.tas.gov.au/topics/licensing-and-registration/licensed-occupations/owner-builder-permit

  1. Once you have the necessary certification to manage the building work on your property, you can start to get the planning and building permits from your local council for your shed. The timeframe and requirements for this vary significantly from council to council, and the good news is that sometimes this isn’t always required. We are building permit and shed experts, so if you need a building permit, we would be more than happy to guide you through this part of the journey, saving you a lot of time and effort.

  2. Begin by building the foundation of your shed. The foundation should be level and sturdy to support the necessary weight of the shed.  Once the foundation is complete, and your shed has been delivered, you can start the build!

  3. Get the help of our 5-star customer care team! We can coordinate the delivery of your shed and answer any questions you may have.

Building a shed can be a rewarding DIY project. However, it's essential to carefully plan and execute the project to ensure that the shed is safe, sturdy, durable and functional. If, after reading this, you decide that building your own shed might not be for you, then you’re in luck, as we have a number of incredibly talented sub-contractors that we would be happy to recommend to assist with your build. As they are subcontractors and not employed directly through us at Shed Bonanza, their rates may vary (depending on location, schedules and size of the build).
