A carport is a roof on posts, cheaper and quicker, and fine if you mainly want shade and hail cover. A garage has walls and a door you can lock, so it doubles as storage and a workshop. Most people who start out asking for a carport end up costing both.
It is mostly about what goes in it. A garage is sized around vehicles and sits near the house. A shed is sized around what you are storing or working on, and can go anywhere on the block. If you want both, a bigger shed with a roller door often works out better value than two buildings.
A barn has a taller centre section with a lean-to down each side, so you get height in the middle for machinery or a loft, and useful covered space either side. A shed is one clear span. Barns suit farms and lifestyle blocks, sheds suit almost everything else.
Garden sheds are the small backyard ones for mowers, bikes and garden gear, and they are the only line we have made locally in Victoria. Anything you would park in, work in or run a business from is a shed.
